Managed service for rural connectivity
Avanti EXTEND delivers high-performance and cost-effective 2G, 3G and 4G solutions to remote and hard-to-reach areas across sub-Saharan Africa, providing reliable cellular service to the 100 million people living in these challenging locations that would otherwise be impossible to reach using traditional terrestrial infrastructure.
OUR TECHNOLOGY
Technology and innovation are the beating heart of Avanti
In 2010, we were the first British commercial company to launch a Ka-band satellite, HYLAS 1. Today, we own and operate a fleet of high-throughput satellites covering EMEA, including state-of-the-art steerable capacity. On the ground, we have built a secure and resilient ground network to serve our communication industry partners across EMEA.
5G FROM SPACE
Leading the way on satellite communication for 5G
Satellite communications play an important role in the extension of 5G cellular networks in particular to rural and hard-to-reach areas. We are working on the ever greater integration of satellite into the 5G ecosystem. Together with leading technology partners, we aim to develop and validate new technology, such as the first integration of a commercially available 5G core network with a live satellite network. This is an exciting development that will continue the path of changing lives through technical innovation.
Avanti completes second phase of HYLAS 4
The arrival of a new Ka-band antenna, which is 9.2m in diameter, stands 14m and weighs 17,000kg, marks an exciting new milestone. It has taken over 12 months to build in a state-of-the-art facility in the USA, before being shipped to Dakar.
The new antenna system offers exceptional broadband support to deliver backhaul and large-scale connectivity for telecoms and government. The investment provides further support to the Digital 2025 initiative by providing investment, development of skills and delivery of connectivity for Senegal and its surrounding regions.
Avanti’s local gateway partner, Free in Senegal, will host and support the operations of the new gateway from its Tier III data centre facility in Diamniadio.
Reliable and secure connectivity offshore
Supporting day-to-day business operations for the maritime and offshore markets, Avanti ensures the secure exchange of large sets of exploration data for analytics, route planning as well as the safety and wellbeing of crew staff by providing connectivity at sea. Secure and reliable voice and data communication allows ship operators to manage their fleet ensuring real time communication between on shore and offshore offices where terrestrial infrastructure does not reach.
Rural connectivity
Africa as a continent faces a challenge to connect rural users due to the nature of the landscape. Often the CAPEX required for fixed infrastructure to serve rural settlements that are beyond the main towns and cities is commercially non-viable for mobile network operators. Whilst microwave backhaul is an option in some locations, in many instances line of sight or distances involved require expensive and fragile multiple hop links.
Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation came to the realisation that satellite was the most cost efficient and quickest means of connecting these rural areas and commissioned Avanti to deploy VSAT services to remote locations across Tanzania.
Powering the UK’s emergency services with EE
EE partners with Avanti to provide Satellite Cellular Backhaul to over 1,000 fixed and portable base stations across the UK. EE uses bandwidth from Avanti’s Ka-band satellites that connects all EE LTE sites across the country.
Avanti’s satellite cellular backhaul helps EE reach more remote and rural areas of the country, whilst simultaneously boosting the resilience of the network.
“The performance, reliability and versatility we get from satellite is really key for us. It has been part of our design and rollout of our network and how we actually operate the network in life.”
Richard Harrap, Managing Director of Emergency Services Network – EE
