Avanti Awarded Special Humanitarian Recognition by Space & Satellite Professionals International

iMlango Project

London, UK, 25 October 2019

Space & Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) announced today Avanti awarded special humanitarian recognition for the iMlango Project to reach students in marginalised areas in Kenya with individualised online tuition.

SSPI fifth annual Better Satellite World Awards honour established companies along with disruptive innovators who make the world a more prosperous, healthier, better-educated, sustainable and inclusive home for humankind.

In 2014 Avanti began leading the consortium that delivers improved numeracy and literacy educational outcomes to marginalised school children in Kenya through the DFID-funded Project iMlango. Avanti, along with its partners, has developed a whole school programme incorporating satellite broadband internet based individualised learning, which is supported by in-field capacity in technology and support resources and by real-time monitoring based on sophisticated machine-to-machine learning and Artificial Intelligence technologies. To date, the project has been implemented in 205 Primary and 40 Secondary schools across 4 regions in Kenya.

iMlango has used satellite technology to enable over 180,000 marginalised children to improve their educational outcomes, and has allowed them to become better educated, setting them up for the job market.
Kyle Whitehill, Chief Executing Officer at Avanti, commented:

We are honoured to receive this special recognition. This is a fine demonstration that we are making an impact both within our industry and in local communities on the ground. Education is absolutely fundamental to enabling success and empowering individuals to be more, and, through projects like iMlango, we can help children to build a better future for their families and communities.”

About the Better Satellite World Campaign

Working with partner associations and dozens of supporting companies around the world, Space & Satellite Professionals International’s Better Satellite World campaign (www.bettersatelliteworld.com) is changing the global conversation about satellites and their influence on the economy, business and societies everywhere. The campaign was launched in Washington, DC during SATELLITE 2015. It has since become a cornerstone and a viral effort that is successfully communicating the incredible power of satellites for human good.
SSPI has published a series of stories and videos that dramatize the immense contributions of the “invisible infrastructure” of satellite to life on Earth, which are widely shared by individuals, companies and the media. The Better Satellite World campaign is available for repurposing by any organisation or person who wishes to use the content to help promote the industry at www.bettersatelliteworld.com and through the Twitter hashtag #bettersatelliteworld.
