Avanti Communications become UN Business Avenger

At Avanti, our ‘Be More mantra runs through our DNA and we fully support and encourage the UN’s Global Goals by taking a stand and doing our part to make a difference.

Avanti Communications has been announced as 1 of 17 Business Avengers who have joined forces to deliver the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).  We are joining forces with other like-minded corporations to champion the vital role businesses will play in hitting the targets of all Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

We are extremely proud to have been named as the “Business Avenger” for Sustainable Development Goal #4 – Quality Education.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015 by all United Nations Member States during the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and aim to ensure peace and prosperity for people and the planet. The SDGs are made up of 17 Goals that cover actions that aim to reduce poverty, increase health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Why Quality Education is our Business?

The 2019 UN progress Update on Quality Education has indicated that more than half of children and adolescents are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics, while the World Bank has stated that ‘schooling without learning is a wasted opportunity’ (World Bank World Development Report 2018). However, despite rapid technological changes the capacity and capability of teachers and quality of education have not been able to keep up, particularly in Developing Countries. Efforts in education therefore need to be refocused on improving learning outcomes – particularly those women, girls and margnialised people in vulnerable settings.

At Avanti, we have both the aspiration and capability to accelerate the progress already made in education and dramatically change the lives of school children across Africa, allowing them to benefit from a digital world and the improved educational outcomes that brings connectivity.

Together, with our trusted network of partners, we deliver end-to-end educational programmes throughout Africa that brings not only satellite internet connectivity, but also the use of tailored eLearning platforms. With online access to digital content at the click of a button, we are enabling children in some of the most remote parts of the continent to have the same equal right to learn, develop and prosper, with exceptional learning outcomes being achieved.

To date we’ve enabled over 300,000 school children access to online educational content and provided satellite broadband to over 500 schools in some of Africa’s most hard to reach locations, with an improvement in maths learning age of, on average, 18 months in their first year of access. In marginalised communities we have seen the underlying quality of learning being significantly inferior to international rates of progress and we have seen a doubling of their learning progress rates, at just 45 minutes per week access to the learning platform.

Let’s set the path for the next decade

We are at Global Goal Week 2019  for the Launch of the Business Avengers programme and we are hoping to engage people around the world in conversation and action in order to make not only quality education, but all of the global goals a reality by 2030.

Together, we can make a difference!
