Role Purpose
Hub Engineers are product owners of the multi-vendor IP to RF equipment installed across the 7 gateways at Avanti.
The role holder will be responsible for the full product lifecycle of the Hub Platforms – Design,implementation, testing and operational support, ensuring they are operating efficiently through proactive monitoring and regular scheduled maintenance. The Hub Engineer will also play a key role in resolving anomalies/faults in the performance of the hub equipment, in co-ordination with technical support, NOC teams, Vendors and the escalation manager.
All Hub Engineers take part in an on-call rota, providing incident response outside of normal office hours.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensure maximum network & service availability through proactive maintenance and monitoring.
- Provide 3rd line support for all customer facing & technical teams to address faults or queries as required.
- Provide domain knowledge expertise during service design, delivery, and transition of VSAT Hub Platforms into operations.
- Assist with VSAT Hub platform deployment, including supporting installation, configuration, commissioning, acceptance testing and on-going operational support of multi-vendor platforms.
- Continually analyse Hub infrastructure to identify service improvements to enhance performance and customer experience.
- Work closely with platform Vendors to ensure all Hubs are optimally configured and issues are addressed quickly through to RCA.
- Conduct services evaluation identifying and highlighting capacity and utilisation issues.
- Collaborate with and support our solutions teams to ensure the most effective products are designed and implemented.
- Create and update procedures and processes for day-to-day operational tasks and maintenance activities
- Continually research and evaluate vendor technical solutions and products.
- Plan, schedule and deploy changes to the VSAT Hub platforms in a controlled manner for continuous service improvement and expansion activities.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential: –
- Experience working within a live operational environment, preferably in Satellite communications and/or an ISP background.
- Excellent understanding of Satellite Communications, VSAT technology, and RF equipment.
- Operational experience managing VSAT platforms with at least one of the following platforms/vendors: Gilat SkyEdge 2, Newtec Dialog, iDirect Evolution, Hughes Network Systems.
- Experience troubleshooting and resolving VSAT Hub incidents
- Ability to influence and communicate complex technical solutions to peer stakeholders.
- Excellent knowledge of VSAT Hub networks & components.
- Knowledge of IP networking, Routing protocols, LAN/WAN technologies, Internet protocols and applications.
- Troubleshooting networking related issues within a VSAT Hub environment.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic and problem solving skills
- Willingness to work occasional long hours under pressure in geographically dispersed locations
- Ability to successfully apply skills and experience to master new hub technology to become technical subject matter expert.
- Eager to learn new technologies & platforms to continuously expand expertise.
Desirable: –
- A telecommunications or computer science degree
- Familiar with using Linux systems and troubleshooting via CLI
- Familiar with Cisco routers/switches, commands and troubleshooting
- Familiar with virtualised environments and virtual machines.
- Familiarity with open source and monitoring tools such as Grafana/Shinken/Viavi.
- CCNA or equivalent qualifications
- Familiarity with software development, including basic API queries or scripting with Python.
The company operates 24×7 services and this role is required to participate in the on-call rota to support out of office hours emergency support and routine maintenance.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the jobholder is required to perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the line manager from time to time.
